Interventional cardiologists often fear the occurrence of dissections after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), but when using a drug-coated balloon (DCB) there can be occasions when dissections have a healing effect.
This was one of many talking points when Patrick W Serruys (National University of Ireland, Galway, Ireland) sat down with Cardiovascular News to discuss why dissections should not be feared when performing DCB-PCI with the SeQuent® Please NEO.
Serruys discusses results of the TRANSFORM-1 study*, where it was shown that after treatment using the SeQuent® Please NEO (B. Braun), a paclitaxel DCB, dissection volume was not associated with late lumen loss, showing in fact an association with late luminal gain.
“The more you dissect, the better the result is in the long-term, which is a bit counterintuitive because we were always afraid of dissections previously,” says Serruys.
In the interview, Serruys also discusses key features that differentiate potentially therapeutic from malign dissections and how DCBs could promote healing in vessels with dissections.
